Where You Buy a Wood Burning Stove is Very Important

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, August 15, 2012

If you are looking for a new wood burning stove or wood burning fireplace insert, there are many ways to research which one would be best for your home.  The manufacturer’s literature and web sites, friends and neighbors all have an opinions; but an experienced dealer is your most valuable resource. Your neighborhood wood stove dealer will make every effort to fit you to the right wood stove.  Your local dealer does not want you to be unhappy and wants you to be safe and satisfied and to tell your friends.

Wood stove dealers heat their own homes with wood. Big box stores can’t  use their own products at home and will not have much practical operating experience. A dealer can answer your questions and troubleshoot chimney or draft issues.

What product you buy is as important as where you buy it. Most “A” wood stoves lines are extended only to the “A” dealerships who agree to displaying and servicing terms and who attend dealer training sessions. The large home improvement stores sell less expensive products, and only during the winter. They can offer rock bottom pricing but “service after the sale” is usually non-existent or via a 1-800 number, not from the big box store itself.

Buy local and buy from a knowledgeable established dealer to avoid the frustration of owning a wood burning stove or fireplace insert with no support.

Looking for a new wood stove or insert? Contact West Sport in Sudbury where service before and after the sale matters.

Grilling Tips

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, July 11, 2012

You have probably been doing some serious grilling during this great Boston weather we have been having. Here are some celebrity chef grilling tips to make your outdoor dinners and parties even better!

1. Before lighting the grill, apply non-stick spray to the grill grates. The non-stick spray helps keep food from sticking and cuts down on clean-up time.

2. For charcoal grills, never use gasoline, kerosene or highly volatile fluids as a starter. Use electric starters, solid metal chimneys or starters specifically made for lighting charcoal briquettes or wood chunks.

3. Always have an extra bag of charcoal or a full propane tank in case you run out in the middle of grilling.

4. To check if the temperature is ready for grilling on a charcoal grill, carefully hold your hand, palm side down, four to six inches above the grill grate. If you can keep it there for:

  • 5+ seconds, the heat is low
  • 4 seconds, the heat is medium
  • 3 seconds, the heat is medium-hot
  • 1-2 seconds, the heat is hot and ready

5. Keep your meats refrigerated and cold before grilling to reduce chances of bacteria growth.

6. For both gas grills and charcoal, when cooking with a medium to high heat flame keep the lid open when grilling directly over a fire. When you're grilling low and slow, keep the lid closed and use indirect heat.

7. Use the right grilling tools for. Invest in a good set of knives, some tongs, a spatula and a meat thermometer. Never stick the meat, use a turner.

8. Never leave your grill once you have started to grill your food. Stand by your post and be mindful of children.

9. Never squish, poke or cut into any meats you are grilling. This will cause your meats to dry out and overcook. When cooking hot dogs and sausages, turn the heat down and grill slowly to keep them plump and juicy. Keep them moving on the grill to prevent them from scorching.

10. A clean grill is a hotter, healthier grill. Scrub your grill with a sturdy grill brush after each grilling session to keep bugs, insects, rodents and pesky varmints from seeking any tasty leftover bits from your grill.

Enjoy grilling this summer with the right grill and the right tools. Looking for a new grill, grill supplies, propane or charcoal? Contact West Sport.

Grilled Hot Wings for Father's Day

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, June 13, 2012

In Massachusetts, Father’s Day is the kickoff to the grilling season. And is there anything better that the dad in your life loves more than grilling and endless hot wings? Here is a perfect recipe for Father’s Day, and anyone can grill these wings. So if you feel like giving dad a break, no problem.

Why are these the perfect wings? Because they are grilled not deep fried. Grilling these chicken wings makes them so much better than traditional wings! Try them out on a new charcoal grill or pellet grill and you won’t even believe the great flavor.  Grilled wings are tender and juicy and the skin is crispy.

Grill over indirect heat, this cooks the wings slowly, cooking the meat perfectly, and makes the skin nice and crisp; the result is a delicious wing. When they are almost done, take them off the grill and toss them with a mixture of honey and barbecue sauce and put them back on the grill to set the glaze and caramelize.

Sweet and Hot Honey Hot Wings
Ingredients:

  • 1 cup molasses-based barbecue sauce
  • 1 cup honey
  • 12-ounce bottle Frank’s Red Hot Original
  • heavy-duty zip-close plastic bags - 2 gallon-size
  • 4 pounds chicken wings
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  •  sea salt to taste

Instructions:

Mix together the barbecue sauce and honey. Refrigerate.

Divide the bottle of Frank’s hot sauce evenly between the 2 plastic bags. Add half of the chicken to each bag, then seal the bag and turn to coat evenly. Refrigerate to marinate for at least 2 hours, or up to overnight.

When ready to cook, heat one side of the grill to medium, the other to low. Remove the barbecue-honey sauce from the refrigerator to warm to room temperature.

Open each bag just at the corner and drain the marinade. Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil and a pinch of salt to each bag, then reseal the bags and shake gently to coat. Transfer the chicken to the cooler side of the grill.

Cover the grill and cook for 40 minutes, or until starting to brown. Remove the chicken from the grill and place in a large bowl. Pour the barbecue-honey sauce over the wings, then use tongs to toss them to coat well.

Place wings back on the grill for another 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from the grill and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

When these are grilled over hardwood charcoal on a ceramic charcoal grill, or over hardwood pellets in a pellet grills, the flavor is fantastic. These will easily be the best wings your dad or husband has ever had!
